Journey Home

Mary Anne Zammit

It was throughout my childhood days, that I could grasp the concept of time and a glimpse of my existence. It was when I started questioning about what really life is. In my case, that was the beginning of my journey towards home, or the continuation of many other journeys from the past. As it appears, our journey towards home is not a long one and in most of the cases we can encounter lots of events and struggles, but the journey may be far more interesting than the destination itself. Undoubtedly, we all are on a long journey with one destination, that of total fulfilment and peace. Adversely, these elements are slowly fading from our world and we are being faced with darkness.

When a new born comes for the first time in the world, it already seeks the closeness of his/her mother.  It is quite crystal clear that humans are inherently born with the need to belong to somewhere or someone. This emotional bonding and attachment will determine which path we will choose in the future.

What is characteristic is if we are going to form good relationships or not, wheteher we will be light or dark, law abiding citizens or anti social. And so, the   longing for attachment remains with us through the years and the longing remains with us in childhood, adoloscence and  even adulthood.

Till this need  is fulfilled in one way or the other.

In my view, this could be one of the concept of the  centre, our home and it may also apply to the spiritual world.  This concept in itself transports  me to the  aspect of returning and going back. We move through  cycles of life for years  and we come  here on earth in order to learn,  grow and become purified. This is our true home, the centre of ourselves but it entails  a lot of time and  patience, and at times even hardships.

As we go through cycles, we are born, we grow up, we die.

Perhaps, what most remains in our memories is the magical period of youth. We blossom and we embrace the beauty of our sensuality and yearning to taste the friut of love. In our youth days, all around us apprears pure, perfect  and even  magical. Time stops for us  and frequently we are immersed in its waterfall spring.  Indeed it is.

As a matter of fact, when we are in our twenties, middle age  appears to us as seems far away.

As if it will never come.  In our youths we are  full of life and energy and the future seems vague,  vivid only in our dreams and  all is glitters and dreams are real as they are beautiful.

Then we are touched by the magic of love, we fall in love and we taste the first movement of the river of bliss.

A young man and woman want nothing less than to be in each other ‘s company. The beloved  becomes the centre of their thoughts, their  touch, the  kiss opens up for new territory, a place they have  never been before.

Yet, we long to be it.

The feeling of being in love  often feels like being home and convey  the final dream where we belong. Willingly, we let ourselves go in the river wherever it takes us. What is therefore real is thatwhen we fall in love everything changes and every minute becomes magical like a Summer which never ends. A sun on a lonely beach which never sets.

It also feels good and inspirational  to get lost in the beloved s’ eyes and even go deeply till drowning. But, then  the drowning may  hurt and we no longer see  through the eyes of the beloved but through the pain and coldness caused by them.

It is at this moment that home seems  far away, just when it  was so close. The feeling was real warm like the feeling we had when we were in the womb. It is now that we grasp the truth that nothing lasts for eternity.

Nothing is static and whether we like it or not we all embarked on a long journey called self and and we leave the place but still remain in the same place with our thoughts and memories. Every tme we take the journey we always leave a part of ourselves.

The reality is that we are always moving and moving, time flys  and we cannot capture those magical moments. Youth passes and then we exclaim, Oh it passed so qiuckly! Love disappears or we lose that feeling.

And we are back on our journey, to that place of belonging.

Most, often, I think about other journeys. Living in the Mediterranean region, I can never  close my eyes to the reality of other tragic journeys.  This is the case where countless immigrants  embark on long journeys in order to escape war and persecution. They  hope and aspire for a new home, new life in a new country.

Yet, their dreams are abruptly interrupted by ruthless smugglers. There are few who survive but most of them  drown. in cruel waves.

But where is  home?

Because home is the inner feeling of peace of findng balance and harmony between the external and internal.

Yes, a  home is a house which offers shelter and comfort and a sense of belonging. It is the place where the turmoils  of world of everyday,  where life does not torment us.

Maybe our house may offer interior comfort  but the home we need to strive for is within ourselves. This is only attained by  cultivating pure thoughts inside and peace.

I strongly, believe that this is the real home where conscious or unconscously we are heading there. Once, we achieve  inner peace,  then we are immune to vices and power.

I only hope that we all come to this point of belonging, of finding our home within.  This is what the world needs badly at this time. At the end the universe is within us.
